I think there have been subtle influences trying to separate people from God for the last 100 years or so. Business being open on Sundays probably did touch the lives of many, many church-going people; first by the option of doing business on the Sabbath, second by requiring people to work on their traditional day of rest. Then there are the school functions, particularly sporting events/practices that now take place on Sunday. Children are required to attend these activities if they wish to participate in the program. Even Scouts have campouts, etc. that interfere with traditional Sunday worship.
