Since When?

Since when did having a physical handicap nullify the need for politeness?  At the university there was a young handicapped girl who waited for me to open the door for her and then walked through without so much as a thank you.  I said something about it and her reply was “I’m handicapped and you should open the door without expecting a response.”

I wanted to pick her up and set her back outside the door, but instead told this young clueless person that I too have a handicap but it has not interfered with my ability to be civil and polite.
