After the news that two American hostages were killed in a drone strike targeting Al-Qaeda terrorists, a lot of people have come out demanding that our government take steps to prevent hostages from dying in dangerous areas of the world. Some are demanding a change in policy to include paying kidnappers off to save lives.
Though I empathize with the families of those killed on foreign soil while reporting or working as an aid worker, I am not for ransoming hostages. I am not for setting a precedent of paying off terrorists so that they can use that money to further their cause enabling them to kidnap more Americans. Every American has to know that there is a possibility of being held hostage or being killed. For their families, and in some cases the hostages themselves, to expect America to rescue them is short sighted.
I am left to wonder if the families would be so adamant about paying off terrorists if they knew the money would result in other innocent people being murdered?
