Today, the news has provided me with two thoughts for today:
1. There is a suggestion out there that Americans could work a 32 hour work week and be as productive as when they ‘work’ a 40 hour work week. This leads me to wonder what workers currently ‘working’ 40 hours are doing for 8+ hours while being paid to perform. Don’t get me wrong, it would be nice to have a three day weekend EVERY weekend, but I think people who say they could be just as productive working 32 hours as they are working 40 hours are screwing off at work while they are being paid to produce.
2. On a mountain in Montana in a ski area stands a statue of Jesus. The statue was erected in 1954 by a group of WWII veterans to reflect what they had seen on the mountains in Europe during the war. The land where the statue stands is leased from the government by a private party. However, a woman, Pamela Morris who happens to identify herself as an atheist filed suit to have it removed. Her lawyer said “she would like to ski at Big Mountain but has avoided it for decades since encountering the Jesus statue as a teenager. One of the appeal judges, N. Randy Smith countered that the statue is only visible from a small portion of the resort and it’s possible to ski all day without seeing it. “In other words, there’s no reason to even avoid it,” the judge said. “She has to go specifically looking for it.” My question would be what about a statue of Jesus with outstretched arms is so scary or offensive that it would prevent a person from going past it?
One of the responses to this story posted by someone using the screen name of “Roy” is “Its not about atheists being afraid of god or scared or even about being politically correct. Its just we are the majority now. We can push all this silly fairyland B/S off the map. You Christians had your time but its over,
We will attack anything and everything until the day comes where your belief is just that “Your belief” and you shoving it in our face. You want to believe fine, but keep your views and your opinions privet and out of our lives. All god stands for now is hatred and bigotry and no one wants to be part of that any more. Your god is going down and there is nothing you can do about it.”
I found this both humorous and concerning at the same time. This person’s spelling and punctuation is atrocious. Add to that only 7% of the American population is non-theistic, this person’s contention that they are the majority leaves me wondering about our education system. I also find it status quo that someone would identify Christians being hateful and bigoted while posting this hate filled opinion. It seems to be the acceptable standard now.
