If you ask a question which contains a supposition, you are inferring the supposition is true, not asking a question. ~ ME
Examples of inference free questions:
- How are you today?
- What makes the wind blow?
- How does a caucus work?
Examples of inferences:
- Is your point of view because of racism? You are inferring racism is the cause.
- Is it ethical to do that? You are inferring something is unethical.
- What would your mother think? You are inferring their mother would not approve.
This thought for today comes from a professor, on the topic of a border wall between the USA and Mexico said “How come no one is advocating building a wall at the Canada border? is that because of racism in any way do you think?” The inference from this professor is some Americans only want to build to keep Hispanics out.
He went on to say “I think the reason people keep coming here illegally is because they can find jobs.” He rationalizes someone committing a crime is okay if it benefits them.
