Thought for Today

A friend of mine today said “Guns don’t kill people, bullets kill people.  The Second Amendment does not protect ammunition so make ammunition illegal.”

My friend is an artist, and a darn good one at that.  Having that analytical mind that I was both blessed and condemned with, I came up with the thought process to determine how he came to this conclusion:

ARTIST = LIBERAL = IRRESPONSIBLE

But my friend is not irresponsible, as far as family goes anyway, so my hypothesis could not be correct; or could it?  Let’s have some fun with analyzing this (I say ‘fun’ because I love figuring out cause and effect or action reaction processes).

First I would like to set some base data.

How did Jeffrey Dahmer kill his victims?  First one was a 10 pound dumbbell to the back of the head.  Other victims had holes drilled into their skulls and then acid or boiling water poured into the holes, and yet others were stabbed.  Are stoves, boiling water, acid, knives, or dumbbells considered bad?  Who is to blame for Dahmer’s actions?  Is the Frigidaire stove to blame?  How about the Nautilus Dumbbell, is it to blame?   Nope, all the blame was put on Dahmer as it should have been.  Even the liberals didn’t argue this one.

Something more recent, Ethan Couch while intoxicated drives his pickup truck into people killing four.  Who was responsible: him; his parents; the pickup truck; or ‘affluenza’?  The judge bought off on the affluenza excuse (probably due to a large ‘contribution’ to his retirement fund by Couch’s parents), but pretty much the rest of society blamed Couch and did not buy into affluenza.

How about all the times the defendant has blamed a bad childhood or lack of a parent in the home while growing up as the reason for committing terrible crimes?  Who should we blame for that crime being committed?  Is it indeed the parent’s fault that this person grew up and committed crimes?  There are those who say it is, but still the vast majority hold the perpetrator responsible.

When drunk drivers hit and kill someone, do we blame the vehicle manufacturer?  Do we blame the distillery that made the alcohol?  Do we blame the bar that served the alcohol if the defendant drank in a bar?  Sometimes the bar owner or bartender is held civilly responsible, but for the criminal charges the drunk is charged.

So, in the vast majority of cases the perpetrator is held responsible, unless a gun was involved.  Somehow when a gun is involved the populace in part wants to blame the availability of guns for the crime.  Alcohol, knives, cars, and about everything else except explosives is easier to get than a gun, but people will cry that if guns were not available, these crimes would not have happened.  I say that even if guns were not available, the person who committed the murder with a gun would find another way to commit that murder.

In 2014 (latest year available), 32,645 people were killed in motor vehicle accidents.  Also in 2014, 12,587 people were killed by gunfire.  How many of these deaths were suicide that was miscalculated as murder, we do not know.  There were a total of 14,249 murders that year.  There were 2.3 times more deaths by vehicle than there were murders.  480,000+ American people died of cancer attributed to tobacco in 2014, that is 38.6 times more people than gun deaths, and yet tobacco products are still available and people give more attention to guns, so it is not the high number of guns that is drawing this attention.

So what makes people hold people responsible for their crimes EXCEPT when a gun is involved; I do not know.  However, I do know that guns don’t kill people as neither do bullets.  It is people who kill people.

So with everything considered, I guess my conclusion would be that some people cannot logically think.  Therefore, for my friend I would have to say:

ARTIST = LIBERAL = ILLOGICAL

What do you think?
