In the Land of Lincoln, where liberal minded people often forget that there are consequences for actions the State Comptroller who is a conservative has decided to hold lawmakers responsible for their actions.
The state comptroller, Ms. Munger is still issuing paychecks to state lawmakers but holding back payment of those checks until they pass a budget. Illinois has been operating without a budget since June of last year and without appropriated funds there is no money to pay anyone including those who provide services to the elderly and disabled.
Illinois currently has a six billion dollar deficit and holding back on the $1.3M dollar legislators paychecks is nothing compared to the total deficit, but it sends a message to the lawmakers that they will not be rewarded for failing to pass the budget.
Many of the democrats in the legislature are calling this pay stoppage as nothing more than an attention getting measure by Ms. Munger who faces a re-election battle in November. However, there are other democrats that say this is the proper thing to do and probably should have been months ago.
I personally laud Ms. Munger even though I don’t live in Illinois. I think every state and the federal government should have a law that prevents lawmakers from being paid after the end of the fiscal year each year if they do not have a budget for the next fiscal year in place. In fact the law should state that no elected official in either the legislative and executive branch will be paid if a new budget is not in place before the end of the current fiscal year, and all income not paid out will be forfeited by the elected members of those two branches until the new budget is in place.
Which brings me to the thought for today:
