Did you know that Santa Claus is based on the 4th century bishop, Bishop Nicholas who would travel around his parish leaving coins in the shoes of his parishioners? Nicholas is the patron saint of children. Thus at Christmas time, Santa Claus brings gifts to good little boys and girls.
Hanging stockings is also attributed to him from a story that he gave a poor father of three daughters money for their dowries. To get married the bride’s father had to give a dowry and this man had none and therefore his daughters would remain single. Hearing of his dillemna, Nicholas threw three bags of gold coins through the man’s window. It is said that money landed in stockings that were hung to dry.
