Thought for Today (1/10/2017)

I was going through some college papers and found an assignment from literature.  The assignment was to take the story Pickman’s Model by H. P. Lovecraft and adapt it poetry.  If you haven’t read it, take the time to do so!

It is a story, according to IMDb, “Pickman’s Model is about a morbid painter named Richard Upton Pickman, who created from his fiendish brush “unbelievable loathsomeness and moral foetor.” William Thurber, a student of occult art and author, becomes obsessed with Pickman and pursues him learning more and more about the source of his art until it finally consumes him.”

One episode of Rod Serlings Night Gallery (1963-1973) was dedicated to Pickman’s Model and I remembered it when I read the short story.  Anyway, the poem I wrote came out like this:

  What demented thoughts

in the artist’s mind

paints tortured beasts

and ghoulish feasts?

What insanity brings

this art to the masses

without a care

for what the people will bear?

What evil conjures

those abstract demons

from an imaginary spell

into this living hell?

As I found this assignment interesting, would this poem entice you to read the short story if you haven’t?
